Certified nursing assistants are the entry-level candidates in the nursing field. They provide basic medical assistance to the patients. These contents are taught through classroom as well as clinical sessions, however the maximum part of it is learnt during the clinical training, as the candidates get hands on experience of several tasks that are required to be performed after becoming a certified nursing assistant.
The requirements that are necessary to be done before enrolling for the nursing aide training program.
- Age: 18 years or more
- Qualification: High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Medical Check up: Tuberculosis (TB) and skin test
- Background Verification: To check for any criminal records against your name
The faculty or the instructor who conducts the training for the candidates aspiring to become certified nursing aides are Registered Nurses (RN). The registered nurses are nursing aide professions who have pursued their certification program from accredited training institutes and obtained the license for the same. Apart from the certification, they should also possess at least 2 years of experience in the nursing field. However, in addition to this, some states accept only those RN's who possess two years of work experience in a long term care facility. Besides the knowledge about the nursing skills, they should also possess the knowledge about the federal and state regulations that are designed for the certified nursing assistants.
The cost of the training program is not the same throughout the United States of America. The fees for the CNA courses in Charlotte is different from other states. The course fees depends on the accreditation level, course length, location of the training institute and the facilities provided. The fees for the training comprises of the tuition fees, examination fees and the miscellaneous fees that includes the cost of study materials, uniforms, equipment such as the stethoscope. The training cost may range anywhere from USD 200 to USD 2500.
There are many federal organizations that provide financial assistance to those candidates who are not able to pay the course fees. These financial assistance can either be in the form of scholarships, grants or loans. The American Red Cross Institute is one such organization that provides financial aid to those who are in need of it. There are some community colleges too that offer scholarships for the desired students.
Some nursing care facilities provide free training to the candidates who are willing to work with them for a certain period of time after obtaining their certification. These type of classes are called as free CNA classes and they follow the contract that determines the agreement between the nursing care facility and the candidate applying for the free nursing aide training.
Duration of the CNA Program
The CNA programs comprise of both the classroom and the clinical sessions that require more than the standard duration i.e. 75 hours. It usually extends for around 4 to 5 weeks. Some training institutes conduct two batches per day, one in the morning and the other in the evening. CNA crash course are also popular modes of learning whose duration is less (approximately 2 weeks).
CNA Certification Exams
The last bridge that you need to cross in order to obtain the designation of a certified nursing assistant is the CNA certification exam that is organized by the State Board of Nursing. This exam contains questions on all the things that are taught during the training program. You will have to clear the skills test evaluation and the written test. The written test contains 60 multiple choice questions and the skills test contains five questions that you need to perform in front of the examiner. Finally, on passing both the test, you will be given the certificate and the license. Obtaining a CNA license grants you the permission to apply for nursing aide jobs in any health care organization located in the respective state.
